Maternal Diet Quality from Pregnancy to The Early Postpartum Period and Their Associations with Postpartum Depression (PPD)

Abstract
This study aimed to explore maternal diet quality changes and associations with PPD in Canadian women. A total of 1,623 women from the APrON cohort were included. Maternal dietary intake data were collected using web-based 24-hr recalls at the second and third trimesters and 3-month postpartum, then calculated to CFG and LH scores. PPD symptoms were assessed by the EPDS at 3-, 6-, and 12-months postpartum. GBTM was used to identify profiles in diet quality changes from pregnancy to postpartum. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between diet quality scores and the risk of PPD. Two profiles were derived: low- stable and moderate-stable. No associations were found between LH scores and the risk of PPD, but higher postpartum CFG scores were associated with a lower likelihood of reporting PPD symptoms after adjusting for sociodemographic covariates. Future research should further determine whether diet quality improvements lead to better postpartum mental health.
