Abstract
"Rescue" was the first scheduled Canadian ship to pass through the old Michigan State Lock in 1858, establishing trade between Collingwood and Fort William. At that time a group of men formed a company known as Northwest Trading & Colonization Co. at Toronto. They bought the twin screw steamer "Rescue," built at Buffalo, New York in 1855, and fitted her out for passenger and freight trade. She was 121 feet long with a gross tonnage of 350 tons and commanded by Capt. James Dick. On July 12, 1858, the "Rescue" steamed out of Collingwood with passengers, freight and mail for the Red River and arrived at the mouth of the Kaministiquia River on the 15th of July. The contract price to carry the mail was $1,200 and the first consignment was three letters and two newspapers. At the time of the first Riel Rebellion, the "Rescue" was commissioned as a gun boat and went to Thunder Bay along with the gunboat "Prince Albert."
