Cet ouvrage constitue une véritable synthèse des transformations majeures que le Québec a connues au cours du xxe siècle. On emploie volontiers le terme de révolution démographique pour désigner les nombreuses modifications de comportements à la base de la reproduction démographique et sociale. À l'instar de la majorité des sociétés occidentales, le Québec a clairement complété une série de transitions ; d'abord avec la baisse de la mortalité puis celle de la fécondité, ensuite avec la transformation des modes de constitution des familles et le renversement de la pyramide des âges. Les générations du baby-boom qui ont d'abord contribué à rajeunir la population québécoise contribuent désormais à son vieillissement accéléré. L'accroissement de la participation des femmes au monde du travail et la tertiarisation de l'économie posent l'épineuse question des rapports des individus au travail et à la famille. Au tournant du xxie siècle, le Québec, marqué par une immigration accrue et de plus en plus diversifiée, devra choisir son modèle d'intégration.
