Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Presented at DeIndustrialisation and its Aftermath conference, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. 1-4 May 2014

\n
\n
I was invited to chair a session on Post-industrial sound along with archeologists:
\nDr Hilary Orange , honorary research associate, UCL
\nJeff Benjamin, Michigan University
\nAs part of this seminar I presented a version of "The Blast" as a work in progress

\n
This ten minute film is an enquiry into the process and interpretation of industrial decomposition. It explores the evolution of a unique “alien” habitat that does not occur anywhere else in Britain. A rare community of plants and animals depend on this sensitive Magnesian limestone based ecosystem.

\n
\n
“The Blast” is a work in progress documenting a chemical beach used as a dumping ground for the waste from the four collieries in the town of Seaham Harbour, Co. Durham. My interest was ignited on finding that it was used as a location for the penal colony of the Hollywood film “Alien 3” suggesting a sense of otherliness.

\n
\n
It is now a regenerated wildscape with distinctive features and a rich history. I have captured footage from this region. The sound track is composed from the environmental data of the field recordings using specialised recording techniques including geophonic hydrophonic, airborne and structural recordings.
\nSu Gent was the editor of the film.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
