En esta trabajo analizamos la transformación de Kelowna, una ciudad de 150 mil habitantes en el valle del Okanagan en el interior de la provincia de la Colombia Británica en Canadá, bajo el impacto del constante cambio que impone el neoliberalismo a ciudades y regiones. Estudiamos los esfuerzos históricos de los grupos dominantes locales en hacer la ciudad competitiva – y sus empresas rentables – frente a los cambios acelerados impuestos por el capitalismo. Sostenemos que estos usan el racismo como carta de atracción a través de vender el área como blanca frente a las inmigraciones de gente de color en las grandes ciudades. Hacemos hincapié en los intentos tempranos de vender la ciudad como un lugar ideal para jubilados. Luego, enfatizamos que las transformaciones ulteriores del postfordismo llevaron a tratar de vender Kelowna y el Okanagan como un paraíso para empresas tecnológicas. Últimamente se ha hecho un esfuerzo concertado de marketing para mostrar el Okanagan como un polo de atracción para turistas adinerados que buscan tanto esquiar como reafirmar su clase social a través de degustar vinos.
