Prevalence of Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection in elk herds in south-western Alberta, Canada

Abstract
In this cross-sectional sample study the prevalence of Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection in nine different elk herds in south-western Alberta is investigated. D. dendriticum is a liver fluke that can infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals, including elk, and requires two intermediate hosts, one being a land snail and the other a brown ant.\nFaecal samples have been collected from a portion of the nine herds and were processed for the detection of D. dendriticum eggs using a modified Wisconsin technique with a zinc-sulphate flotation medium (1.36 s.g.) and microscopic examination. No eggs have been found in the examined faecal samples. Several reasons explaining the negative results are discussed.\nD. dendriticum has proven to be an invading parasite and several options to help monitor this pathogen in the future are proposed.
