Abstract
El hipotiroidismo es la endocrinopatía más común en perros1,2,3, sobre todo en razas grandes, presentándose entre los 2 y 9 años de edad en el 80% de los casos1. Las razas con mayor prevalencia son el Setter inglés, Dálmata, Basenji, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Viejo Pastor Inglés, Bóxer, Maltés, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Husky Siberiano, Border Collie, Golden Retriever y Labrador, existiendo un componente hereditario en muchas de estas razas, aunque también llega a presentarse en mestizos casi en la misma proporción2,4,5. El hipotiroidismo es la endocrinopatía más sobrediagnosticada en perros3. Sus signos son inespecíficos e incluyen embotamiento, letargo, apatía e intolerancia al frío; el 88% presentan anormalidades dermatológicas las cuales incluyen resequedad, hirsutismo, alopecia simétrica, seborrea, mixedema, otitis y pioderma5. Puede haber anestros persistentes y estro silencioso, en machos puede presentarse atrofia testicular1 pero el recuento espermático no presenta diferencias en comparación con el de perros sanos4. Pueden existir depósitos lipídicos en córnea, úlcera corneal y uveítis; las alteraciones cardiacas incluyen bradicardia, arritmias, debilidad del choque de punta y alteraciones del complejo QRS, también se pueden presentar diarreas y estreñimiento. Hematológicamente pueden existir anemias normocíticas normocrómicas en el 25 al 40% de los pacientes, hiperlipidemia, hipercolesterolemia en el 75% y coagulopatías4,5,6,7. La obesidad se observa en el 40 al 49% de los perros hipotiroideos3, 5. La enfermedad puede inclusive no presentarse de la manera “clásica” y solo presentar miopatía o neuropatía generalizada2. En algunos perros se llegan a observar alteraciones del comportamiento, como ansiedad por separación, fobia a los truenos y a los sonidos fuertes, escasa concentración o problemas de aprendizaje, comportamientos compulsivos, agresión posesiva e inclusive agresión dirigida al propietario.
