Abstract
For centuries the Mennonites led a life that was marked by persecution, oppression and violence.For a long time it looked as if they would never come to rest, until they finally found a new home in North America .However, not all people who were born into this religious community agreed with their attitude and their rules.This thesis examines the history of the Mennonites and accompanies them on their way from the German-speaking areas of Europe to Canada.The focus will then be put on the people living in these communities.With the help of various works of Mennonite authors I will analyze why life in these communities was not always easy, for men as well as women.Through the analysis of various poems and a closer examination of the rhetorical strategies used by the authors, I will draw a more accurate picture of the lives of the Mennonites and the ones that decided to leave their communities.
