Al segle XIV la nova situació social, l’arribada de la pobresa des del camp i les successives crisis demogràfiques van fer trontollar el món urbà. Ràpidament els dirigents de les ciutats van bastir un sistema per garantir la seguretat; un entramat de normes construït a partir dels recels que generava tot allò desconegut: els mercats es van normativitzar, es va regular el llançament de residus industrials i domèstics i, igualment, la figura del pobre també va ésser objecte d’una anàlisis exhaustiu per determinar-ne la funció i rebutjar aquells pobres que no eren útils al món urbà. Enmig d’aquest context l’hospital es va erigir com la millor eina per gestionar la pobresa i la xarxa hospitalària lleidatana també es va haver d’adaptar a la nova situació social.
\nLa ciutat medieval era un ambient d’olors intenses, de mercats atrafegats i de carrers fangosos per on discorrien les clavegueres plenes de brutícia. Però, més enllà d’aquesta sordidesa, era un ambient on l’home lluitava per viure en comunitat i defensar-se de tot allò que l’agredia.
\nAquesta investigació presenta la Lleida medieval, una ciutat enmig d'una cruïlla de camins entre Catalunya i l'Aragó, governadora d’un espai, avui en dia desaparegut, que ocupava terres a una banda i l’altra d'una frontera llavors visible, únicament, a través d’un mapa polític.
