Nella realizzazione di una strada convergono questioni tecniche di natura costruttiva e scenari economici non meno determinanti, oggi come ieri, nella lunga vicenda della viabilità. La storia della strada accompagna da vicino la storia della civiltà: accorciare i tempi di viaggio, annullare i confini naturali, agevolare lo scambio di idee, favorire l’integrazione di mondi diversi, sono tutti elementi attraverso cui si è affermato il progresso non solo materiale dell’umanità. La strada esiste da settemila anni e la scelta degli argomenti trattati corrisponde alla natura complessa delle opere viarie: tecnica e ingegneria si sono mescolate a politica, economia ed amministrazione.
