Abstract
Perinteiden ja uudistusten ristipaineissa kuvaa Suomen Kansallisteatterin toimintaa vuosina 1974-1991, suomalaisen teatterin ja koko yhteiskunnan suurten muutosten keskellä. Kai Savolan pääjohtajakauden alussa Suomen Kansallisteatteri näyttäytyi pysähtyneenä ja vanhoillisena. Kahden vuosikymmenen ja monien vaiheiden jälkeen se oli noussut yhdeksi eturivin teattereistamme. Kansallisteatterin toiminta teatterimme murrosvuosina on jäänyt paljolti kertomatta ja kuva ajan teatterista liian kapeaksi. Tarkasteltavan kahden vuosikymmenen toiminnassa Kansallisteatterin asemaa määrittävät neljä eri vaihetta, joita on kuvattu etsinnän, taistelun, puolustautumisen ja tasapainon saavuttamisen vuosiksi. Sekä teatteri että siihen kohdistuneet vaatimukset muuttuivat. Pirkko Koski on Helsingin yliopiston teatteritieteen emeritaprofessori.
