L’objet de cet article est double. Il s’agit d’abord de poser un regard sur la place qui est accordée actuellement à l’étude du récit dans l’enseignement obligatoire dans les pays francophones. Au départ des données de la recherche « Gary » (Brunel, Dufays, Emery-Bruneau et Florey, 2024), on essaie d’indiquer comment, à trois niveaux scolaires différents, les enseignants belges, français, québécois et suisses concernés par l’étude exploitent les aspects du texte narratif lorsqu'ils conduisent une séance d'étude sur une nouvelle et quelles opérations de lecture ils y associent. On s’attache également à montrer les liens qui peuvent être établis entre ces choix didactiques et les performances de lecture des élèves, qui ont été mesurées juste avant l’observation des pratiques de leurs enseignants. En second lieu, et beaucoup plus rapidement, l'article ébauche une réflexion prospective basée sur ce qu'un chercheur et un formateur d’enseignants peut percevoir comme des priorités aujourd’hui en ce qui concerne l’étude du récit en classe de français
