Genaueste Lektüre der Zeichen, "mit denen die Welt zu uns spricht wie ein großes Buch", und vernünftige Schlussfolgerungen daraus − das ist die Methode, mit der William von Baskerville im frühen 14. Jahrhundert arbeitet. Der Franziskanerbruder stützt sich insofern - auch bei den Todesfällen, die später im Kloster geschehen und um deren Aufklärung er sich bemüht - auf die Methode der so genannten 'Abduktion'. Dieses Verfahren ist durch den amerikanischen Wissenschaftstheoretiker Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914), auf den der Begriff 'Abduktion' zurückgeht, als Vorgang definiert worden, "in dem eine erklärende Hypothese gebildet wird". Die Besonderheit der Abduktion liegt dabei darin, dass sie das einzige Verfahren einer Schlussfolgerung darstellt, das eine tatsächliche Erweiterung des Wissens zur Folge hat - um den Preis allerdings, dass man sich auch irren kann. Alle anderen logischen Schlüsse decken demgegenüber immer nur auf, was in ihren Prämissen bereits enthalten ist.
