Apesar dos avanços em neurologia veterinária na última década, as doenças do sistema nervoso periférico continuam a ser uma das áreas mais desafiantes no reconhecimento da doença, no diagnóstico e no tratamento. Uma tetraparesia flácida aguda e progressiva ocorre quando há uma lesão do neurónio motor inferior, e apresenta diversas etiologias que podem manifestar-se de forma muito semelhante. As quatro causas mais comuns são o botulismo, a polirradiculoneurite aguda, a paralisia da carraça e a miastenia gravis aguda fulminante. A polirradiculoneurite aguda e a miastenia gravis aguda fulminante envolvem mecanismos autoimunes, já o botulismo e a paralisia da carraça devem-se a toxinas que são ingeridas ou libertadas no animal, respetivamente. Os membros pélvicos são frequentemente afetados primeiro e a gravidade dos sinais pode variar de uma fraqueza muscular generalizada até uma tetraplegia com paragem respiratória. O objetivo desta dissertação é contribuir para o reconhecimento de lesões do neurónio motor inferior em cães por parte dos clínicos e para a distinção das doenças que engloba. São apresentados três casos clínicos de cães que deram entrada com tetraparesia aguda não ambulatória na Clínica Referência Veterinária (Alcabideche, Portugal). Os casos apresentados incluem um Bulldog Francês macho com 3 anos de idade, um Shih-Tzu macho com 4 anos de idade e um Labrador Retriever fêmea com 1 ano de idade. O Bulldog Francês apresentou défices nos nervos cranianos e disfunção autonómica, achados comuns no botulismo. O ShihTzu possuía hiporreflexia generalizada, afonia e uma recuperação espontânea característica da polirradiculoneurite aguda. O Labrador Retriever apresentou um exuberante megaesófago e incapacidade de gerar força muscular após exercício físico seguido de descanso, sinais clínicos que se manifestam na miastenia gravis aguda fulminante. Dois dos casos clínicos apresentados tiveram uma evolução favorável, enquanto que o Bulldog Francês morreu devido a paralisia dos músculos respiratórios.
