Asymmetric localization of messenger RNA (mRNA) is a post-transcriptional means of regulating gene expression. It is an important mechanism used early in development by a wide range of organisms to convert cellular asymmetry into complex patterns of cell fate. Some of the best-known examples of asymmetric transcript localization occur during the formation of the egg in Drosophila melanogaster. For example, during mid-oogenesis gurken mRNA, which encodes the Drosophila homologue of the vertebrate Transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha), becomes asymmetrically localized to the presumptive dorsal anterior region of the oocyte. Localized gurken mRNA is translated, resulting in local activation of the Drosophila Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to establish the oocyte dorsal-ventral axis.
