Este estudo apresenta os principais acontecimentos que concorreram para a liquidação extrajudicial do Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul (BRDE), em 07 de março de 1989 e analisa os fatores determinantes para a retomada das operações e para o processo de reconsolidação do banco. Para tanto, realiza uma revisão e um levantamento de dados que permite um maior embasamento e um melhor entendimento a respeito dos fatos que caracterizam os períodos abordados. Deste modo, o estudo demonstra que o Banco Central do Brasil conseguiu liquidar o BRDE por meio da conjunção de três justificativas: elevação das dívidas públicas estaduais, liquidação do Banco do Estado de Alagoas S.A. (PRODUBAN) e redução da participação do Estado na composição do Sistema Bancário Nacional. Além disso, comprova a importante participação dos funcionários para a retomada da instituição e analisa as principais variáveis econômicas que são influenciadas, positivamente, pela ação de um banco de desenvolvimento, tais como geração de empregos, impostos e investimentos.
