Abstract
Carson draws on classical mythology and epic literature in her novella Autobiography of Red, wresting the time-tested resonance of the Hercules myth from classical antiquity and lending it a modern flair. Michael Ondaatje, a Canadian writer like Carson, explores a different sort of mythology in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, turning to the great American epic of the Wild West. His exploration of Billy the Kid depicts a historical figure who becomes mythologized through his representation in popular culture, a man who comes to symbolize the untamed and endlessly seductive frontier. Yet even as Carson and Ondaatje turn to popular myths for inspiration, both authors have a vexed relationship with mythology. Each author reinterprets myths in order to shed light on neglected or alternative possibilities inherent in these passed-down stories.
