What Events in Canadian History Are Most\nSignificant? A Survey of History Teachers

Historical significance is one of the most fundamental and inescapable aspects of history and history education. History teachers make countless decisions about the historical significance of events in their daily practice, but little research has focused on the criteria that history teachers use to decide which events in Canadian history are historically significant, the events in Canadian history teachers rate as most historically significant, and the demographic factors that influence their historical significance ratings. This article focuses on the results of a survey in which English- and French-speaking teachers currently teaching Canadian history in a Canadian K–12 school, Collège d'enseignement general et professionnel (in Quebec), or college or university (n = 270) rated the historical significance of one hundred events in Canadian history, selected three factors that most influenced their ratings, and answered various demographic questions. The results suggest that teachers utilize historical and educational criteria to assess the historical significance of events, that their historical significance ratings were temporally and theoretically diverse, and that demographic factors have more influence on their historical significance ratings than the intellectual criteria they identified. Résumé: L'importance historique est l'un des aspects les plus fondamentaux et les plus incontournables de l'histoire et de son enseignement. Les professeurs d'histoire prennent quotidiennement des décisions quant à l'importance historique des événements. Toutefois, les critères qu'ils utilisent pour décider quels événements de l'histoire du Canada sont importants et quels sont ceux qu'ils jugent les plus importants n'ont guère été étudiés, pas plus que les facteurs démographiques qui influent sur leur évaluation. Le présent article porte sur les résultats d'une enquête dans laquelle des francophones et des anglophones qui enseignent actuellement l'histoire du Canada au pays, dans une école primaire ou secondaire, un collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (au Québec), un collège ou une université (n = 270), ont évalué l'importance historique de 100 événements de l'histoire du Canada, choisi trois facteurs ayant le plus influencé leur évaluation et répondu à diverses questions d'ordre démographique. D'après ces résultats, les enseignants utilisent des critères historiques et éducatifs pour évaluer l'importance historique des événements; leur évaluation est diversifiée sur le plan temporel et théorique, et les facteurs démographiques ont plus d'influence sur leur évaluation que les critères intellectuels qu'ils ont définis.
