An explosion in an occupied compartment, such as the crew compartment of armoured vehicles, is a serious threat to the occupants. In order to protect the occupants in the crew compartment, the explosion must be extinguished in a few hundred milliseconds. Until recently, halon has been widely used for the protection of an armoured vehicle crew compartment. However, due to the Montreal protocol, the use of halon has been severely restricted. Various systems using halocarbon agents have been introduced recently for the explosion protection of crew compartments. NRC's previous study showed that halocarbon agents are not ideal solutions because large quantities of acid gas by-products would be generated during suppression. There are growing environmental concerns over the atmospheric lifetime and the global warming potential of most halocarbon agents.
