Mục đích của nghiên cứu này là đánh giá hiệu quả xử lý của hệ thống đất ngập nước kiến tạo chảy ngầm ngang có trồng cây và không trồng cây trong việc làm sạch nước thải nuôi cá Tra thâm canh. Khả năng tái sinh, sinh khối và hấp thu dinh dưỡng của Bồn bồn (Typha orientalis L.) được đánh giá trong nghiên cứu này. Các hệ thống xử lý được vận hành với tốc độ tuần hoàn là 200% thể tích nước trong bể cá mỗi ngày. Dinh dưỡng thừa trong nước bể nuôi cá sẽ được làm sạch tại hệ thống đất ngập nước kiến tạo và sau đó được bơm trở lại bể cá. Nồng độ đạm và lân trong nước bể cá vẫn đảm bảo sự phát triển bình thường cho cá Tra trong suốt 4 tháng nuôi không thay nước. Đặc biệt, Bồn bồn đã góp phần loại bỏ 17%N và 33,8%P từ nước thải thông qua quá trình hấp thu vào sinh khối thực vật. Ngoài ra, hiện tượng tảo phát triển và chất nền bị nghẽn chỉ ghi nhận trên hệ thống không trồng cây.
