Abstract
The purpose of the present program of research was to consider how two contemporary theories in the domain of human motivation---achievement goal theory and self-determination theory---could illuminate processes taking place during artistic performance. More specifically, achievement goal theory suggests that the goals one pursues are good predictors of how well one functions at the cognitive, affective and behavioral levels. Our aim was to explore the association between different types of goals (i.e., performance-approach, performance-avoidance, mastery, and intrinsic-aesthetic) and performing artists' affective states and performance.
