La présente étude porte sur l'adaptation psychosociale des jeunes de 4 à 17 ans en fonction de la structure parentale, puis en fonction du nombre de transitions familiales. Les données proviennent de 528 familles desservies par les centres jeunesse du Québec. La première hypothèse stipule que les jeunes de familles intactes afficheront de meilleurs indices d'adaptation que ceux de familles séparées, et que les jeunes de familles recomposées et de familles monoparentales ne se différencieront pas entre eux. Les résultats indiquent que les jeunes de familles recomposées présentent plus de difficultés. La seconde hypothèse stipule que le nombre de transitions familiales traduit une relation négative avec les indices d'adaptation, sans égard à la structure parentale actuelle. Les jeunes de familles monoparentales sans épisode de recomposition affichent une meilleure qualité d'adaptation psychosociale, alors que les jeunes qui ont vécu trois recompositions familiales ou plus présentent plus de difficultés.
