L’economia balear pateix d’una sèrie de debilitats estructurals sobre les quals convé investigar. Entre elles, figura el baix nivell de formació de la població, a causa de les baixes taxes d’escolarització postobligatòria, tant de l’educació universitària com de la no universitària. En aquest treball analitzem els determinants que in"ueixen en la presa de decisions dels estudiants a l’hora de decidir si realitzar estudis d’ensenyament postobligatori i ens centrarem en els factors subjectius revelats pels estudiants. Els principals resultats de l’estudi revelen el següent. En primer lloc, una immensa majoria dels enquestats (un 95%) manifesten voler seguir estudiant després de l’ensenyament obligatori, fet que contrasta amb les taxes d’escolarització reals observades als 17 anys per a la població balear. En segon lloc, que els alumnes que tenen més probabilitat de seguir estudiant són els que tenen pares amb una certa capacitat econòmica per poder finançar els estudis dels fills, els que estan més ben informats i els que tenen més bons resultats acadèmics. En tercer lloc, només una petita minoria dels estudiants (un 4%) al·leguen tenir problemes econòmics per poder realitzar estudis universitaris.
