Binnen het raamproject "Beoordelingssysteem Nieuwe Stoffen", dat op het RIVM te Bilthoven wordt uitgevoerd, worden methoden ontwikkeld voor een systematische voorspelling en beoordeling van de risico's voor mens en milieu die verbonden zijn aan de produktie en het gebruik van zogenaamde "nieuwe stoffen". Een van de onderzoekingen richt zich op het ontwikkelen van een model dat toegepast kan worden voor het schatten van het gedrag en het lot van deze stoffen in bodems onder variabele locale en meteorologische omstandigheden. Dit (deel)project, "Locale Variaties" (projectnr. 958603), wordt in samenwerking met het Institute for Environmental Studies van de Universiteit van Toronto, Canada, uitgevoerd. Dit rapport is een verslag van het tweede bezoek aan dit instituut.
