Abstract
This critique of American linguistic geography developed from an interest in a linguistic survey of the Pacific Coast being conducted under the direction of Dr. David W. Reed of the University of California in connection with the projected Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. Parts of the American linguistic Atlas have been completed: The New England Atlas was published in 1939, and the Atlas of the South Atlantic States awaits publication. Atlas surveys in the Middle West and South are being forwarded and some near completion. The AtIas surveys collect linguistic data covering vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar; and dialect areas are delineated on maps or in tables by reference to the geographical distribution of lexical, phonetic, and syntactic features. Curiosity about Linguistic Atlas survey in California stimulated this inquiry into the procedure s of the Atlas project.
