Abstract
Le Quarter Horse est issu du croisement des chevaux européens importés par les colons sur le sol des Etats-Unis. Il fut d'abord utilisé comme cheval de travail et pour les cour ses de villages d'un quart de mile auxquelles il doit son nom. Il a ensuite évolué vers un cheval robuste et d'une grande adaptabilité. Première race de chevaux au monde par le nombre de ses représentants, il est peu connu en France où son élevage tend à se développer grâce au succès de l'équitation western. Cette dernière reste sa discipline de prédilection, mais sa polyvalence fait qu'il est aussi apprécié en équitation classique. La fixation du standard en 1940 a limité le nombre d'étalons fondateurs de la race et favorisé la consanguinité à l'origine de l'apparition de maladies génétiques. Des tests ADN existent pour détecter les porteurs et éviter leur mise à la reproduction. Ainsi leur éradication passe par l'information des éleveurs.
