Dans une première partie bibliographique, l'auteur nous présente l'historique, les caractéristiques ethnologiques et les prédispositions pathologiques du labrador Retriever. Il consacre la seconde partie à une étude réalisée sur 192 chiens de race labrador pour lesquels une dysendocrinie a été diagnostiquée au sein du laboratoire des dosages hormonaux de l'école nationale vétérinaire de Nantes. Cette étude montre que le labrador est fortement prédisposé à l'hypothyroidie, qu'elle soit primaire ou fonctionnelle. L'auteur tâche ensuite de montrer s'il existe un tableau clinique caractéristique des labradors hypothyroidiens, hypercorticiques et hypocortisoliques en comparant ses résultats à ceux de différentes études effectuées toutes races confondues.
