Development of culturally relevant dietary education tools for Canadian South Asians living with diabetes: a qualitative study

Abstract
This thesis is an investigation of the needs of dietitians and South Asians for culturally relevant diabetes dietary counselling tools. A focus panel with dietitians (n=8) reported a need for resources targeted to differing client skill levels, and preferences were noted for individual counselling. Barriers to education included finances, access, South Asian diets, and cultural views on health. Five focus groups of individuals from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India were conducted (n=53). These community focus groups reported larger portions but fewer daily meals in Canada than South Asia. Cultural foods were preferred at dinner. Ingredients and portions were not measured. Fasting was an important value, and sweets were a crucial component of holidays. A need for resources in South Asian languages, inclusion of pictures, and separate legumes, sweets and snack food groups was identified. Findings were used to draft new dietary counselling tools for the South Asian community.
