La ganadería en América La tina ha tenido un crecimiento caracterizado por el aumento del número de animales a expensas de la incorporación de nuevas zonas de pastoreo. Las estructuras agrarias de los países, las políticas sectoriales y las distorsiones causadas por las coyunturas del mercado impulsaron a los ganaderos en el pasado -y continúan haciéndolo en el presente- a colonizar terrenos en ecosistemas frágiles, generalizándose importantes nexos entre pobreza, presiones demográficas y deterioro de los recursos naturales en zonas tradicionalmente vulnerables. En la Argentina, país de perfil fuertemente agroexportador, la ola de expansión de la agricultura comenzó en la región pampeana y fuera hacia el norte o fuera hacia el sur; alteró sensiblemente en su avance los perfiles de los sujetos sociales involucrados y sus sistemas productivos, ya sea sobre tierras colonizadas y en producción o sobre el espacio natural de las provincias del interior del país.
