Abstract
The prevalence of childhood abuse in Canada is reflected in the experience of many clinicians. While some studies examine the lives of these Experienced Clinicians, few examine this issue from a relational perspective. The purpose o f this qualitative study was to describe, using their own voices, the essence of the experience of Experienced Clinicians, to examine and understand their experience of recovery and resilience and how this has influenced their professional lives. The data came from interviews with clinicians who report a history of childhood abuse and who have a current clinical practice. The participants were asked to describe, (a) the factors and experiences that influenced their recovery from childhood abuse, and (b) how these experiences have shaped and influenced their clinical practice. This study merges theoretical, educational, and practice literature and provides recommendations for graduate level education and support for clinicians.
