Abstract
Le projet de doctorat porte sur l’extraction de l’alumine de l’argile de Murdochville, une argile principalement composée d’illite. Dans un premier temps, le procédé de lixiviation à l’acide sulfurique appelé procédé H+ (Cohen et Mercier, 1976) a été évalué et une alumine de grade électrolytique a été produite. Cependant, ce procédé nécessite l’utilisation d’argile préalablement calcinée et conduit à des rendements plutôt faibles. Différentes approches ont été évaluées afin d’éliminer l’étape couteuse de calcination. La lixiviation dans l’acide chlorhydrique a été étudiée, mais s’est avérée efficace pour extraire l’aluminium seulement dans le cadre d’une opération sous pression. Suite aux essais de lixiviation à l’aide chlorhydrique, un nouveau procédé de lixiviation mixte a été développé. Ce procédé combinant la lixiviation à l’acide sulfurique suivie d’une deuxième lixiviation du résidu à l’acide chlorhydrique a conduit à l’obtention de hauts rendements d’aluminium tout en permettant l’élimination de l’étape couteuse de calcination préalable de l’argile de Murdochville.
