Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Physiological and ecological responses of fish to mining contamination have been well documented in Southern regions; yet, research is limited in more Northern locations where climate has a major influence on fish biology. Therefore, this study aims to assess the ecotoxicological impacts of mining operations on fish and their environment in the Caniapiscau river watershed. In this project, one lake directly affected by historical mining activities (Lake Denault in Schefferville), two lakes close to mining operations (Lake Cherny in Fermont and Lake Houston in Schefferville) and one reference lake (Lake Perroche) were sampled for water, sediment and fish. Eight species were collected including Northern pike (Esox Lucius), Lake charr (Salvelinus namaycush), Brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), Round whitefish (Prosopium cylindraceum), Longnose sucker (Catostomus catostomus), White sucker (Catostomus commersonii) and Lake chub (Couesius plumbeus). Fish health was evaluated by using biometric indices, quantification of fourteen elements concentrations in fish tissues and the analysis of biomarkers of antioxidant capacities (CAT, SOD, GPx) and oxidative damage (MDA, 8-OHdG). Fish collected in the Schefferville area exhibited generally higher trace element concentrations than individuals from the Fermont area and compared to the reference site. Moreover, element bioaccumulation and associated impacts differed among the sub-families under study (Salmoninae, Coregoninae and Catostominae). Catostominae and Coregoninae displayed important liver concentrations of manganese, which were positively correlated with SOD activity in Coregoninae as well as CAT activity and 8-OHdG concentrations, in addition a negative correlation with GPx activity, in Catostominae. In Salmoninae, elevated liver concentrations of selenium were associated with an increase of SOD activity and 8-OHdG concentrations. Regardless of the studied sub-family, hepatic mercury concentrations were positively correlated to biometric variables (length, weight and age). This research highlights an interspecific variability in the effects of mining contamination on fish health, especially in the Schefferville area.
