Abstract
This thesis explores Spanish narratives of coexistence in Muslim and Native American lands, collected around the issue of captivity, through a corpus that covers the period of the intellectual history of Spain marked by the struggle against Islam, the Counterreformation and the conquest of America (1492-1609). The first of the works studied is the Viaje de Turquía, a satirical dialogue from the mid-sixteenth century. This text controverts the idea of a rigid separation between Christendom and Islam, West and East, through a comparative critique that argues for a more pluralistic, open and tolerant Spanish society. The second part focuses on two texts representative of the work and thought of Miguel de Cervantes: El trato de Argel, his first theatrical piece, written in 1580 on his return from captivity in North Africa; and the Historia del cautivo, one of the so called episodes included in the first Quijote (1605). Both works question the concept of religious uniformity as a criterion of identity, showing the public that, to achieve harmony and social integration, tolerance and inclusion lead to more favorable results than the repression of differences, which is counterproductive. The final section is focused on the Relación of 1542 by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, in which the author relates his shipwreck, captivity and long journey across North America between 1528 and 1536. This work is framed by the controversies surrounding the legality of the conquest and the manner in which the faith should be propagated, seeking to undermine generalizations that were used to legitimize coercion, such as human sacrifice, cannibalism and the Aristotelian concept of natural slavery.
