Abstract
Analog missions allow NASA to research, develop and test operational concepts and systems in challenging Earth environments similar to those that astronauts may face during missions to near earth objects, the moon or Mars. Project Summary: NASA conducts analog missions on Devon Island, Canada because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure. It is also home to a large impact crater that offers a unique opportunity for exploration operations, design, development, testing and training. Description: In collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Mars Institute and the SETI Institute, the HMP studies scientific elements of the Haughton impact structure and surrounding terrain. These activities allow NASA to test surface robotic operations, traverse planning, and science data collection techniques. Time Frame: The HMP was conducted from June 1 - Aug. 8, 2010. Significance: The HMP develops new technologies, strategies, human factors experience, and field-based operational concepts key to planning future human and robotic exploration.
