Abstract
Potato is a high value crop of economic significance in Atlantic Canada.The nutritional status of the plant is related to the outcome of key yield parameters of significance for potato producers.Potato petiole sampling is commonly used to assess the crop's nutritional status.The objective of this study is to relate petiole nutrient data to yield outcomes on farms in New Brunswick (NB) and Prince Edward Island (PEI).There were 39 farms evaluated in NB, and 109 farms surveyed in PEI during a five year period from 2010 to 2014.Sampling occurred once per week for the six week period from early to late tuber bulking stages.Petioles were analyzed for NO3-N, non-NO3-N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S, B, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu, Na and Al concentrations.Yield outcomes were related to untransformed nutrient concentrations, as well as nutrient data transformed using the isometric log ratio (ILR) method.The non-NO3-N concentration in petioles was the most consistent indicator of improved tuber yield and specific gravity.The tuber yield in NB and specific gravity in PEI were both positively correlated to B concentrations in petioles.In contrast, the Zn and Mn concentrations in petioles were negatively correlated with tuber yield and specific gravity.On the NB farms, the Ca, Mg, and B concentrations in petioles were the most consistent indicators of improved tuber yield, but the NO3-N, S, P, and K concentrations in petioles generally showed a negative correlation with tuber yield.Specific gravity did not tend to be positively correlated with the nutrient concentration in petioles, but was consistently and negatively correlated with the NO3-N, S, P, and K concentration in petioles.The use of ILR transformations did not improve the interpretation of potato nutritional status in either province and led to potential misinterpretation if observed out of context.This study demonstrates that temporal fluctuations in petiole nutrient concentrations may be an indicator of economically-important potato yield outcomes on farms in NB and PEI.iii RsumLa pomme de terre est une culture d'importance conomique de grande valeur dans les provinces des Maritimes au Canada.L'tat nutritionnel de la plante, li aux rsultats aux paramtres cls de rendement, est important pour les producteurs de pommes de terre.L'chantillonnage du ptiole de la pomme de terre est couramment utilis pour valuer l'tat nutritionnel de la rcolte.L'objectif de cette tude est de relier les donnes nutritionnelles du ptiole pour produire les rsultats dans des fermes au Nouveau-Brunswick (NB) et l'le du Prince-douard (.-P.-.).Trente-neuf fermes (39) furent values au Nouveau-Brunswick, et cent neuf (109) observes l'le du Price douard, au cours d'une priode de cinq ans, soit de 2010 2014.L'chantillonnage a eu lieu une fois par semaine pendant une priode de six semaines, du dbut de leur plantation la fin des tapes de ramassage.Les ptioles ont t analyss pour leurs concentrations de NO3-N, non-NO3-N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S, B, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu, Na et Al.Les rsultats de rendement ont t associs des concentrations de nutriments non transformes, ainsi que des donnes nutritionnelles transformes l'aide de la mthode du ratio (ILR) du Journal isomtrique.La concentration de non-N-NO3 dans les ptioles a t l'indicateur le plus cohrent de rendement de l'amlioration des tubercules et de poids.Le rendement des tubercules au Nouveau-Brunswick, et de densit l'ile du Prince douard tait tous deux positivement corrl aux concentrations de B dans les ptioles.En revanche, les concentrations de Zn et Mn dans les ptioles sont ngativement corrles avec le rendement des tubercules et de leur densit.Dans les fermes, au Nouveau-Brunswick, les concentrations de Ca, Mg et B dans les ptioles furent des indicateurs plus cohrents dans l'amlioration du rendement de tubercules, mais le NO3-N, S, P et K des concentrations dans les ptioles montrent gnralement une corrlation ngative avec le rendement de tubercules.La gravit spcifique ne tendait pas tre en
