Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi, Van Bölümü’nde yer alan Gevaş, Van Gölü'nün güneydoğusunda, Van şehrine 40 km uzaklıktadır. Van Gölü güneyine kadar uzanan Güneydoğu Toroslar’ın kuzeyindeki Çadır Dağı'nın (3537 m) kuzey eteklerinde, Van Gölü’ne dökülen Gevaş Deresi tarafından açılmış olan bir vadi \niçerisinde kurulmuştur. Van Gölü'ne dökülen Gevaş Deresi boyunca gelişen Gevaş’ın, yerleşme tarihi Urartulara kadar uzanır. Daha sonraki dönemlerde çeşitli uygarlıkların hâkimiyetinde kalan yerleşme, 1548'de Osmanlı topraklarına katılmış ve 1860 yılında da kaza merkezi durumuna getirilmiştir. Gevaş’ın oturduğu saha 221 ha kadar olup 2000 yılı sayımına göre burada 10988 kişi yaşamaktadır. Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarından 1950'ye kadar 2000 nüfuslu küçük bir yerleşme olan Gevaş, 1950'den sonra göç alarak, nüfusu 10.000'i aşan yerel bir merkez konumuna gelmiştir. Van’a yakın oluşu nedeniyle fonksiyon bakımından çeşitlilik kazanamamış olan Gevaş, çevresindeki ve özellikle idari yönden kendisine bağlı yerleşmelerin tarım ve hayvansal \nürünlerinin pazarlandığı, hizmet fonksiyonları içinde idarî hizmetler ve perakende ticaretin yoğunluk kazandığı bir kasaba niteliğindedir.
