Abstract
Context: Due to the impact that institutionalization has on older people, it becomes pertinent to adopt programs to prevent dementia, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance, which are common problems in institutionalized contexts. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influence of laughter yoga on depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, positive and negative affect, cognitive and executive functioning, and sleep quality of institutionalized older people. Method: The sample consisted of 48 older individuals, aged between 67 and 95 years, divided into three groups. Sixteen older people were submitted to the laughter yoga program (Experimental Group), 16 elderly were submitted to relaxation group dynamics (Comparison Group 1), and 16 elderly were placed on a waiting list to be rehabilitated (Comparison Group 2). The study had a randomized, quasi-experimental design and longitudinal follow-up, with psychological evaluation data collected in two moments. The ten sessions had a average duration of 40 minutes, with a bi-weekly frequency. They were assessed before and after intervention through the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Frontal Assessment Battery and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Results: We used ANCOVAS to compared pre and post-intervention, and we have found significant differences in the level of anxious symptomatology, negative affect, and cognitive functioning. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the most effective way of preserving sleep quality, cognitive level and avoiding negative affect, depression and depressive symptoms in the institutionalized older adult is to include the elderly in group activities, promoting socialization and maintaining the assets. However, this work has also demonstrated that laughter yoga is an effective therapy for the improvement of cognitive functioning and in the reduction of anxious symptomatology and negative affect.
