Les étudiants postsecondaires s’attendent à obtenir un bon retour sur leur investissement après les études (Boudarbat et Montmarquette, 2009). Il en est de même pour les étudiants internationaux. Cependant, pour avoir accès à ce revenu potentiel plus élevé, il faut que l’intégration au marché du travail soit réussie par ces derniers. Le système actuel favorise l’immigration des individus au niveau éducatif élevé. Cependant, il n’assure pas l’intégration réussie dans le pays d’accueil, tant au niveau culturel, social ou économique (Kaushik et Drolet, 2018). La pénurie de main-d’œuvre et le vieillissement de la population au Canada accentuent les besoins de travailleurs internationaux venant s’établir ici. Grâce à notre système d’éducation, il est possible d’attirer et de retenir ces étudiants internationaux. Même si une éducation dans le pays d’accueil permet d’améliorer l’intégration, les immigrants font face à des défis plus importants que les nationaux lors de l’entrée sur le marché du travail (Heilbrunn et al, 2010). Donc, il devient crucial de cerner les facteurs qui permettent à ces internationaux d’obtenir un emploi après leurs études. Ainsi, la question qui demeure est : quels sont les facteurs qui influencent la durée avant d’obtenir le premier emploi auprès des diplômés universitaires internationaux au Canada? À cet effet, nous avons utilisé l’Enquête nationale auprès des diplômés de 2018. Cette enquête est produite par Statistique Canada et vise la cohorte de diplômés de 2015 au Canada. Nous utilisons ainsi plusieurs modèles probit et logit afin d’identifier les facteurs d’influence afin de répondre à notre objectif d’étude. Les résultats montrent l’importance du niveau d’études, du domaine, ainsi que du statut de l’étudiant, soit international ou national, parmi les facteurs qui influencent la durée avant l’obtention du premier emploi à la suite de la diplomation.
