Abstract
Ipek(Peja/Pec) is an important area regarding the observation of the socialstructure and demographic features of 19th century. It may beconsidered as a significant example that exposes clearly the Ottoman’smulti-ethnic and multi-cultural society structure in Balkans. Starting by theend of 14th century the city was ruled by Ottoman’s and, as the timepassed by it passed several transformations in administrative aspects and theproperty issue. Thus in late 1800’s it was given the status of Sanjak and wasattached to the Vilayet of Kosovo.Inthis study, we try to give some information regarding the demographic andreligious structure of the Ipek city in the last quarter of 19thcentury according to the data provided from the Salnamas of the Vilayet ofKosovo and the documents of the Ottoman Archive (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi).Also, it aims to give information about the relationship between Muslim andnon-muslim groups and other religious institutions in the region.
