La possibilité d’une autonomie temporelle permettant d’articuler les temps sociaux est l’un des premiers arguments mis en avant par Uber pour inciter à devenir chauffeur. Cette promesse est aujourd’hui mise à mal par la baisse des rémunérations, qui contraint les travailleurs à accroître leur durée de travail et à privilégier les horaires atypiques. En s’appuyant sur deux enquêtes par entretiens menées entre 2018 et 2019 à Montréal et à Paris auprès de chauffeurs Uber, l’article se propose d’analyser les stratégies d’articulation des temps sociaux qu’ils mettent en place dans ce contexte de pression économique accrue. Il met en lumière deux régimes de temporalité, correspondant à des usages différenciés de l’autonomie associée au statut d’indépendant, qui reposent sur des configurations familiales spécifiques et qui produisent des normes de parentalité divergentes. Pour la majorité des chauffeurs, le choix entre l’argent et le temps se traduit par un investissement intensif au travail, par une dégradation de leur santé et par un accroissement des inégalités de genre au sein de leur couple. Si certains parviennent encore à profiter du statut d’indépendant pour mieux articuler les temps sociaux, il ne s’agit que d’une minorité disposant de ressources spécifiques.
