Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

"James H. Reed" was a steel bulk freighter of the Interlake Steamship Co., which was operated by Pickands, Mather, & Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. It was built in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1903. On April 27, 1944, it sank in about five minutes after a collision, in a heavy fog, with the Canadian Steamship Line Steamer, "Ashcroft." The collision occurred about forty miles north of Ashtabula, Ohio, on Lake Erie, in the early part of the day. Twelve of the "James H. Reed" crew lost their lives. The other 23 were rescued by the "Ashcroft," which sailed into Ashtabula, Ohio for repairs. "James H. Reed" was bound from Escanaba, Michigan with a load of iron ore for Buffalo, New York and "Ashcroft" was headed for Toledo, Ohio from Buffalo, New York to pick up coal. As an aside note, that same day, the "Vigor" was sunk, without loss of life, in a collision with the "Philip Minch" about fifty miles northwest of Cleveland, Ohio.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
