Abstract
A Hieronymo Soriano, Jerónimo Soriano o Gerónimo Soriano, se le considera por muchos historiadores de la medicina, como uno de los pioneros o el pionero de la pediatría española y mundial 1-4. Como derivada de la “H” de antaño, en español se transforma en “J.”, en los nombres. De su vida no se sabe gran cosa. Nació en Teruel, en año incierto. Se han manejado fechas dispares. Existe una copia del libro de bautizados de la parroquia de la Catedral de Teruel: “a 6 de septiembre de 1575, se bautizó un hijo de Ivo Soriano, labrador; llamóse …Jerónimo”, pero sin más datos. Resulta imposible creer que, en su veintena, Jerónimo escribiera dos libros. Me inclino, con otros autores, que debió nacer hacia 1540-50: “tras más de 40 años de profesión…me decido a escribir este tratadillo de la “Methodo de curar las enfermedades de los niños”, deseando alcanzar amigos, y nombre, aunque no lo deseo, obedeciendo a las peticiones de algunos que con sus cartas me lo han solicitado. Todo ello dedicado al muy ilustre Gaspar de Pedro, caballero domiciliado en la ciudad de Teruel”.
