Abstract
Resumen: El último cuarto del siglo XIX fue un periodo crucial para la Historia de las relaciones entre Canarias y el continente americano.La crisis de la cochinilla y la falta de alternativas lanzaron a la emigración a miles de habitantes de las islas, así como la Guerra de Cuba hizo que muchos de ellos tuvieran que ir a luchar y a morir en el frente de batalla.En este artículo se analiza la importancia de estos hechos en una región tan importante en la época como afectada por ello como es el Norte de Tenerife y como la prensa conservadora de la zona crea un discurso sobre ello.Aunque el contacto con América no se limitó al intercambio de personas, sino que también se sucedieron intercambios comerciales, culturales o de ideas.
