L'abbé Léon Provancher (1820-1892) est connu dans l'histoire des sciences au Québec comme un naturaliste. Fondateur et animateur de la première revue consacrée aux sciences naturelles au Québec, Le Naturaliste canadien, Provancher consacre la plus grande partie de sa vie à l'étude de plusieurs branches de l'histoire naturelle, de la botanique à l'entomologie en passant par la conchyliologie, l'ornithologie, la mammalogie et l'ichtyologie. C'est toutefois dans le domaine de l'entomologie qu'il effectue ses travaux les plus importants. Les recherches qu'il mène sur l'ordre des Hyménoptères, la publication de ses découvertes dans Le Naturaliste canadien et la parution de trois volumes de la Petite faune entomologique du Canada lui valent une considération internationale. Cependant, au Québec, les historiens tardent à reconnaître sa contribution scientifique. Le présent mémoire, qui se situe à la jonction de l'histoire et de l'entomologie, vise à combler cette lacune. \n \nL'analyse du réseau de correspondance entomologique de Provancher, du contenu de sa bibliothèque scientifique et du corpus des Hyménoptères qu'il découvrit a permis de constater que Provancher utilise une démarche scientifique dans l'élaboration de son ?uvre entomologique et taxinomique. Sa contribution scientifique se situe principalement d ans ces deux disciplines qui étaient en plein développement au XIXème siècle, en Amérique du Nord. \n \nCes connaissances nous montrent clairement que Provancher, malgré son isolement relatif, était un savant très impliqué dans le développement de la science de son temps. Il contribue ainsi, plus que tout autre, au désenclavement du Québec dans le domaine des sciences naturelles en jetant les bases de la recherche en entomologie, en conchyliologie et en botanique. \n
