Les représentations d’artistes ont produit une image mythique dans laquelle la vie et l’œuvre sont intrinsèquement liées. Cette idéalisation de l’artiste s’applique-t-elle au contexte canadien? Ce mémoire se base sur une comparaison entre deux séries réalisées par Sam Tata (1911-2005) et Gabor Szilasi (né en 1928). Les photographes, qui ont fait de Montréal leur ville d’adoption, ont respectivement produit A Certain Identity – 50 Portraits by Sam Tata, diffusés sous la forme d’une publication (1983), et Portraits/Intérieurs, présentée en 1979 au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Ces séries se composent de portraits d’artistes canadiens réalisés dans leur résidence privée. Les photographes ont dû utiliser l’espace afin de signifier le statut particulier de leurs sujets, mais comment y sont-ils pris? Les deux photographes ont représenté le milieu environnement de manières complètement différentes, ce qui permet d’interpréter leurs photographies comme des approches divergentes à la figure de l’artiste. Gabor Szilasi présente une vision plus matérialiste de la créativité alors que Tata reprend les codes de l’artiste romantique. Des initiatives contemporaines témoignent de la fascination toujours vivante du public pour la vie privée des artistes de renom. Conséquemment, une étude des cas de figure précédents la tendance actuelle permet de donner un point de vue plus local sur un phénomène mondial.
