Abstract
Ce mémoire porte sur les rapports sociaux qu'ont entretenus la garnison britannique à Québec et la population civile entre 1839 et 1871. Après avoir fait l'examen détaillé des diverses facettes de la présence des troupes à l'intérieur de la cité, ce mémoire identifie et analyse les différentes occasions d'interaction entre les deux groupes. La présente étude offre des exemples concrets d'interactions positives et négatives entre la population civile et les militaires. Différents types de sources ont contribué à venir étoffer cette recherche; journaux, archives judiciaires et archives militaires. D'une part, l'analyse de la participation des hommes de Sa Majesté dans un contexte d'aide à l'ordre civil vient redéfinir le rôle de la garnison dans la société de Québec. D'autre part, un questionnement plus approfondi de l'implication des militaires dans le désordre permet de mieux comprendre leur participation à la criminalité à Québec. Il ressort de cette étude que les rapports sociaux encourus par la garnison envers la population de Québec entre 1839 et 1871 sont marqués par une adaptation mutuelle.
