Esta dissertação tem como premissa explorar o papel das fotógrafas em Portugal de Oitocentos, através de uma abordagem interdisciplinar, que envolve as diferentes, mas articuláveis, áreas da História da Fotografia Portuguesa, da História da Arte, e uma perspectiva de Estudos de Género; com vista em elaborar um estudo do que seria a prática fotográfica, do ponto de vista feminino, no século XIX, em Portugal. Desde o advento da fotografia em 1839, várias mulheres em todo o mundo dedicaram-se à fotografia de forma continuada, seja de forma artística, como passatempo, ou mesmo como meio de subsistência. Embora não haja nada de invulgar em afirmar a existência destas mulheres em Portugal, a historiografia apropriada para as incluir permanece ausente, e elas parecem ter sido descartadas para um notório esquecimento. Como estudo de caso principal foi escolhida, a fotógrafa profissional, Maria Eugenia Campos, quase inédita a nível de publicações, uma vez que a investigação em curso consiste, sobretudo, na análise visual e formal das suas provas fotográficas em papel, constituída principalmente por cartes de visite (e alguns cabinets), da década de 1880. As cartes de visite eram simultaneamente uma lembrança da pessoa retratada, para ser distribuída a familiares e amigos, e o cartão de visita do fotógrafo, e hoje demonstram ser uma fonte crucial de informação sobre a época. Maria Eugenia Reya Campos auto-denominava-se de primeira fotógrafa portuguesa na década de 1870, ainda que fosse oriunda de Valência de Alcântara em Espanha, filha de pai português e mãe espanhola. Esta pioneira abriu estúdios profissionais de fotografia no Alentejo, nomeadamente ateliers provisórios em Beja, Elvas e Évora (e provavelmente em Portalegre, onde residiu). Foi em Lisboa que se estabeleceu num estúdio de forma permanente entre 1882 e 1917. Nesta dissertação foram consideradas todas as mulheres fotógrafas identificadas no período entre 1844 e 1918, de nacionalidade portuguesa ou estrangeira, amadoras ou profissionais, quer pela sua relevância cultural e artística, quer pelos seus atributos profissionais. O principal objectivo deste estudo é atenuar a ausência bibliográfica existente sobre o assunto, numa época em que existe uma crescente sensibilização para a temática das mulheres artistas e do seu papel na sociedade.
