Abstract
El artículo trata de la necesidad de incrementar la oferta monetaria en los comienzos de cualquier proceso de industrialización (en este caso el catalán) muy por encima del crecimiento de la renta. En España esto se vio enormemente dificultado debido a las inadecuaciones inherentes a la reforma monetaria de 1824. En el estudio se precisan estas inadecuaciones la paridad de cambio de la moneda española con el franco, la relación bimétalica y el nivel de tarifas- y se evidencia que ello implicó que entre 1824 y 1848, la acuñación de moneda en España fuera reducida en extremo, tanto en términos absolutos como relativos. En la segunda parte del trabajo se describe cómo se consiguió acuñar en Barcelona (entre 1836 y 1848) cantidades considerables de moneda de oro; y se muestra que ello constituyó una condición necesaria para proceder a la creación de un banco de emisión en Barcelona (en 1844), susceptible de generar una oferta de moneda fiduciaria que desvaneciera, definitivamente, el agobio de la deflación que había lastrado el despegue de la industrialización de la industrialización en Cataluña en sus inicios.
