Perspective et personnalité temporelles des étudiants en psychologie selon l'orientation théorique

Abstract
Le choix de l’orientation théorique définit et guide l’entièreté du travail du psychologue clinicien. Ce processus décisionnel s’enclenche dès le début des études universitaires en psychologie. Cette étude établit des liens entre l’attitude temporelle des étudiants en psychologie et leurs traits de personnalité en fonction de leur appartenance à chacune des quatre principales orientations théoriques reconnues par l’Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ) : psychodynamique-analytique, cognitive-comportementale, existentielle-humaniste et systémique-interactionnelle). Cent-quarante-deux étudiants au baccalauréat (n = 63) et au doctorat (n = 79) en psychologie ont complété quatre questionnaires en ligne évaluant les traits de personnalité, la perspective temporelle, la personnalité temporelle et l’appartenance aux orientations théoriques. En ce qui a trait à la personnalité temporelle, l’adoption de l’orientation existentielle-humaniste et systémique-interactionnelle est associée à de moindres tendances à la polychronicité, à la proximité des résultats, à la conscience du temps en vacances et à la planification à la maison. En revanche, l’adoption de l’orientation cognitive-comportementale est associée à de fortes capacités de planification, de conscience du temps, de polychronicité et de proximité des résultats. Au niveau des traits de personnalité, l’adoption de l’orientation psychodynamique-analytique est associée à une propension à l’extraversion et le névrotisme, mais également à moindre tendance à l’agréabilité et au caractère consciencieux. De plus, l’adoption de l’orientation cognitive-comportementale est associée à une propension au caractère consciencieux. Enfin, les résultats ne permettent pas d’établir de liens entre l’appartenance à une orientation théorique et les dimensions de la perspective temporelle. La présente étude contribue donc à documenter le profil des étudiants en psychologie, particulièrement au plan des traits de personnalité et des attitudes temporelles. Elle permet d’établir certains liens, jusqu’ici peu étudiés, entre le choix de l’orientation théorique et le profil temporel des futurs étudiants gradués en psychologie.
