In recent years, different methods of CO2 sequestration have been proposed. Among them, mineral carbonation proposes to react CO2 and a metal cation, mainly iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) to form stable carbonates. In the Sept-Îles area, in the province Quebec, the Arnaud Mine project is looking for the exploitation of an apatite deposit and will result into the production of a large amount of mining residues mainly composed of fayalite. These residues, rich in iron (23% Fe2O3) have a potential interest for mineral carbonation. This project proposes to assess the CO2 sequestration potential of fayalite residues for the treatment of combustion gases from industries close to the mine (ArcelorMittal and Aluminerie Alouette). This study of mineral carbonation was carried out using an indirect approach under aqueous conditions with a first step of leaching the Fe contained in the residue using ammonium salt. The Fe is then complexed with 2,2’-bipyiridine before being precipitated in the form of carbonates (FeCO3). The approach developed allowed the sequestration of CO2 and the formation of carbonates with a FeCO3 purity of 71%. Optimization of the parameters in a recirculation scenario showed a Fe leaching capacity of 38% compared to the initial residue, as well as a CO2 removal rate of 57% under mild reaction conditions (pH 12, 80 ºC, 10% CO2 volume, atmospheric pressure, 2 hours reaction) with an overall efficiency of 24% (0.13 g CO2 removed / g residue). The possible recovery of products, as well as the low emissions generated, are optimistic for future industrialization. The thesis consists of two parts. The first presents a synthesis of the study, introducing the context through a bibliographical review, exposing the fundamental physicochemical aspects found on the structure of fayalite and the leaching of its iron cations, the study of complexation and its interactions with CO2 all in the aqueous phase. In the second, the materials and methods are described as well as the main results obtained through 3 scientific articles. Article 1 presents a study of the stability of the complex under different conditions as well as the precipitation of FeCO3 using synthetic reagents without interference. Article 2 presents the study of the optimization of the parameters of the mineral carbonation reaction using the fayalite residues from Mine Arnaud and CO2. Finally, the third article studies the possibility of using this recirculating mineral carbonation technique and offers a basis for identifying the most important parameters for its possible use on a larger scale.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
